Daily use of cannabidiol (‘CBD’) oil may be linked to lung cancer regression

Researchers reported a case in BMJ Case Reports where daily use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil appeared to correlate with regression of lung cancer in an elderly woman. Despite her initial diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer and refusal of conventional treatment, regular monitoring revealed a significant reduction in tumor size over time. The woman attributed this outcome to self-administration of CBD oil, which she began shortly after diagnosis in 2018, following advice from a relative.  CBD, a compound similar to the body’s own endocannabinoids, has been explored for its potential anticancer properties due to its interactions with cellular signaling pathways, including those in cancer cells. While this case suggests a possible link between CBD oil and tumor regression, the authors emphasize it as a singular observation, lacking conclusive evidence regarding the specific ingredients or mechanisms involved.  The report underscores the need for further research into cannabinoids as potential cancer treatments, highlighting their historical medicinal use and current applications in managing chronic pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders, as well as in palliative care. However, comprehensive studies are necessary to determine safety, efficacy across different cancer types, optimal dosages, and potential adverse effects before broader conclusions can be drawn.
