Article Summary:
The bibliographic evidence shown in the present review suggests the clinical utility of CBD for treating both LIDs and the motor symptoms of PD, as well as the neuromodulatory, neuroprotective and antidyskinetic effects of CBD in animal models and pD. Furthermore, the evidence shown on the pharmacological mechanisms and molecular interactions of CBD with various receptors may explain the wide range of therapeutic utility in various neurological disorders.

Despite the promising results for CBD pharmacology, unknowns remain about dosages and mechanisms of action. However, the essential role of CBD as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory is affirmed, as these processes are important in the pathogenesis of pD. The neuromodulatory mechanism of CBD in the BG circuit remains to be studied in greater depth, in order to establish this phytocannabinoid’s physiological role and function as a coadjuvant in PD.
