CBD for cancer: Everything you need to know

Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in cannabis, is gaining popularity for its potential health benefits, including managing symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. While initial studies suggest CBD may offer relief from pain, nausea, and appetite loss—common issues for cancer patients—there is insufficient evidence to support its use as a cancer treatment itself. Research indicates that CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the body, potentially alleviating symptoms through mechanisms such as reducing inflammation and affecting nerve signaling.  However, it’s crucial to differentiate CBD from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another compound in cannabis known for its psychoactive effects. THC, not CBD, is primarily responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis use. While CBD shows promise in managing symptoms, such as stimulating appetite and relieving pain, its effects vary, and more extensive clinical studies are needed to fully understand its efficacy and safety in cancer care.  Moreover, CBD may interact with certain medications and could potentially affect liver function, highlighting the importance of consulting with healthcare professionals before using CBD alongside other treatments. Overall, while CBD holds promise for symptom management in cancer care, it is not a substitute for conventional therapies, and its role in cancer treatment requires further investigation.
